5 Reasons Why I Will Not Be Watching 50 Shades Of Grey
Phil and I have taken a stand in what we allow into our home. God has been speaking to both of us about this and so we have made a conscious decision about what we allow in, whether it’s on tv, a movie, the music we listen to or the magazines we read.
Let’s not kid ourselves, what we allow in under the umbrella of entertainment, is not without consequence. The things we consume have implications for us, our kids and our community. Sure we can justify it as mindless fun, but it is so much more than that. Call me a prude, call me old-fashioned, I don’t mind, in fact, I would rather be those than be liberally minded and allow the devil to subtly affect my moral values. If we don’t take a stand, it is a slippery slide to what else we allow in.
So here are 5 (your lucky, I narrowed it down from 10) reasons I will not be watching the movie 50 Shades of Grey:
1. It is pornography.
I’m sorry, but it is what it is. You can hide it under the disguise of entertainment, but let’s be honest….it is porn. They call it “Mommy porn” to soften it, but just because it is accepted by society, just because it is on the big screen, doesn’t make it ok. From the IMDb reviews I have read, there’s full frontal male nudity, as well as sexual scene’s that are (extremely!) explicit. In fact, the whole premise of the movie is so wrong. Pornography is not healthy in any relationship, so why would we sit with our girlfriends, a bucket of popcorn and allow this into our lives?
2. It is not Biblical.
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures. – Galatians 5:19
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. – Matthew 5:28 (in this particular case, substitute “man” and “him” with “woman” and “her”)
Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. – Ephesians 4:19
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. – 1 Peter 4:1–3
Love is patient, love is kind… it is not self-seeking… Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. – Corinthians 13:4
Nothing in this movie represents God, His love for us, or His plan for our lives. In fact, I feel this movie represents everything I don’t want for every woman and girl that I know!
3. I don’t want my daughter thinking it’s ok!
Gracie is 14 and very aware of everything I watch, read, and allow into my life. Sure, sometimes she thinks I am old fashioned and complains that I am boring, and again, I am ok with that! But it is my job as a Mum to teach her what is acceptable and what is not. The plan that God has for her life and the consequences of the choices she makes. It is my job to bring her up as best I can following God’s guidelines. I don’t want her growing up thinking that sex outside of marriage is God’s best for her, I don’t want her thinking that lust and love are the same things! And I certainly don’t want her thinking that what is portrayed in the movie is a healthy relationship!
4. I don’t want my son thinking it’s ok!
As much as I don’t want Gracie, thinking this lifestyle is ok, I also don’t want Jackson thinking it’s ok! I don’t want Jackson to think that it is ok to treat a woman the way it is portrayed in the movie. I want him to love, protect, respect and care for the women in his life and when he gets a girlfriend, I want him to treat her like Phil treats me. Like God talks about in the Bible, not from a selfish perspective, but from a selfless perspective, living by the Godly principles we have installed in him since he was little. We want the best for our kids, and this movie stands against everything we believe in!
5. Respect.
Respect for women. Women should not be treated like slaves, made to sign a sex contracts and treated like a piece of meat. They should not be treated like second rate citizens and they should not be abused physically or verbally. They should, however, be treated like the Daughters of the King that they are.
Respect for Men. Men should have more respect for themselves than to treat women in this way. Men, rise up and be the man God has called you to be. Love your wife (or girlfriend) as Christ loves the Church.
Respect those in your world. Have enough sense of worth for those around you to protect yourself from the things that are not of God. Let’s hold those around us in high regard and not fill our minds with trash.
Respect your spouse. Again, pornography is not healthy in any relationship, so don’t fill your mind with unhealthy thoughts. Keep your mind pure.
Respect yourself. Have enough respect for yourself that you don’t need entertainment like this to make you happy or fulfilled. Know who God has created you to be. Have enough respect for yourself to say NO!
