In The Ordinary…..

I’ve been spending a lot of time with David lately.
I’ve been loving getting to know him better. I feel we have a deep connection that is growing by the day. But before you get too worried, yes Phil does know I am spending so much time getting to know another man, and he is okay with it!

Like with getting to know anyone, the more time you spend with them, the deeper their story goes. The good, the bad and the ugly all come out. It’s at this level where connection really happens and you have a greater appreciation for all they have been through.  I’m grateful I can get to know David so deeply through the Psalms!

I’m sure we all know the “famous” Bible stories about David, especially the ones where he slew the giant and the one where he had a fall from grace, but as I have been digging into the Pslams, I feel like I have been getting to know another side of him.

Amongst the triumphs, there is the raw real struggle he had with life and his many cries to God for help, oh my, how I can relate!

I went back to read the book of Samuel which is where we start to learn about David.
There are a thousand things I could write about David, so many life lessons we can learn from him (and maybe I will share some of those another day!) but I want to share just one revelation I got from the start of David’s life…..

We read in 1 Samuel 16 that David was chosen by the Lord, and anointed by Samuel. The thing that really struck me is once he was anointed he went straight back to the field to tend his sheep! His public anointing didn’t come till much later.

I don’t know about you, but I would have thought that straight away he would be whisked away and walk into what God had called him to. To leave what he knew and walk into all God had for him.
But no!
He went back to the field to tend his sheep.

How often do we think that when God calls us, things will change immediately! Like we will go from living a “normal” life to living a faith-filled spectacular supernatural life! Maybe that happened for you, but I know for me, life carried on as normal.

Our calling is a walking out process. We live, learn and grow in the ordinary until God sees we are ready to carry what He has for us. I know for me this has happened slower than I would like, yet I can look back and see how far I have grown. But I also realize how much more I still have to learn! My life feels ever so ordinary.

But it is in the ordinary our faith is stretched.
It is in the ordinary we build strength.
It is in the ordinary we will be tested.
And it is in the ordinary we grow resilience.

I am learning not to despise the ordinary, and not wish it away! If you know God has called you to something, He will make it happen, and it will be in His timing. Like David, we are to live in the field until God calls us to the Palace…..but there will still be trials and tribulations even when we do make it to the Palace!

So my friend, live well in your field. Be diligent with the task at hand, and know God is cheering you on and preparing the way for you to walk into your calling! Even if it is not making sense at the moment, God has you!

I love David’s story too. His relationship with God is inspiring. He lives life passionately, he has such an authentic relationship that has encouraged me so many times when I have felt like a failure. He is a shepherd and a warrior. Things that seem so far apart in the natural world yet seen through David’s life we see how one prepared him for the other.
