Restoration VS Relief

This is a phrase I read in my current Bible study, and it has stuck with me. And I mean, really stuck with me!

I think in our fast-paced, modern lifestyle, we are more stressed than ever before.
We rush around from one thing to another without taking the time to breathe, let alone taking time out. And often when we do have 5 minutes to sit quietly, we opt for relief over restoration.
Let me explain…..

Relief is different for all of us but could look like any of the following:
Netflix
Addictive games on our phone or computer
Social Media
Reading
Shopping
Mindless eating
Puzzles, Diamond Art, or other crafty endeavors
Listening to a podcast
Excessive Exercising

Now, none of these things are bad. Honestly, I have (or continue to do) most of these things at different times. They can be great to take our minds off our busy lives. Help us to unwind.

But what if I proposed to you that restoration is better than relief?

Restoration can be, but is not limited to, any of the following:
Reading your Bible
Watching a Sermon online
Listening to a Christ-centered podcast
Doing a Bible Study
Bible Journaling
Sitting in a quiet place with God
Reflecting on God’s goodness
Taking a walk in nature with God
Doing things that center around God and that restores your soul.

So often, we jump for the closest, easiest thing we can find to unplug from the busyness of the world. If it’s quick and easy, we go for it.
Again, there is nothing wrong with any of the “relief” things…..unless of course, you take them to the extreme, which truth be told, I have been known to do in the past!

But I can tell you from personal experience that restoration is way better for you than relief.
Restoration restores not only your mind but your soul as well. It helps you stay connected with God, and drowns out the noise of the world. It leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Of course, it’s all about balance, but if you are feeling stressed, worn out, or simply tired, can I recommend next time you go to grab your phone for some mindless scrolling, grab your bible instead and see the difference it makes!
