Self Care…..Blah, Blah, Blah!!!
Self Care.
If I was going to be totally honest, I hate that phrase!
It has been thrown around so much at the moment and seems to be a “buzz” word on social media! Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and I’m seeing #selfcare everywhere I turn!
Now I know it’s meant to be a good thing, all this self-care stuff but whenever I see #selfcare with photo’s of bubble baths, eating chocolate or candy, or a glass of bubbles, in fact, anything with #selfcare I do a small (okay, maybe not so small) eye roll!
It’s like all these women are using it as an excuse to eat chocolate, take a day off work or to indulge in life’s little treats, all without the guilt because they hashtag it!
Now, please don’t hear me wrong! It is extremely important to look after ourselves, but do we really need the # to justify it?
We can all look after ourselves without having to hashtag it can’t we?
So while I am berating all these women who are “looking after themselves” the funny thing is, I went to the Doctors for a check-up, and guess what? There has been no #selfcare for me!
Low in iron
Low in B12
Low in Vitamin D
Generally, I am not in good health! Oops!
So maybe I should have been taking more notice of those selfcare hashtags!
It’s funny how as women and Mum’s, we are often the last one we take care of! Now we all know we need to look after ourselves, but by the time you have looked after everyone else, there is often no time or energy left for ourselves!
The Doctor suggested slowing down and making time for more rest (as well as putting me on multiple tablets and jabs for the next 6 months!)
I was like, “Sure thing, of course I will slow down” as I dove straight back into everything I was doing!
I am slowly learning that if God asks you to slow down, and you agree, but don’t do anything about it…..He will!
Just as I was starting to get some energy back, I was coming down Kakapuku Mountain, fell, and tore the ligaments in my ankle…….Ouch is an understatement and I now have a beautiful moon boot as my latest fashion accessory for the next couple of weeks!
Okay God, I am listening. No honestly, this time I really am listening!
So I sit here with my leg elevated and not able to do much, but contemplate all that is going on in my crazy world at the moment!
Learning that it’s okay not to be okay. Learning to rest. Learning to lean in on Him. Learning that He is the one who will sustain and provide all I need for this season I am hobbling my way through! Learning that I need to rest and take some #selfcare!
Just another valuable life lesson God is graciously teaching me at the moment! You gotta laugh right?!

You’re right…if God tells us something and we don’t obey, He will take more drastic measures in order for us to learn the lesson. He had been telling me to rest, and I kept thinking I’d rest AFTER everything got done. Then a cancer diagnosis made sure I listened and obeyed.
